Dr John Meffen MA ARCM LTCL FTCL Cert Ed lives in Darlington, County Durham with his wife Kathleen, a teacher and artist. John has devoted his life to the study, teaching and performance of music. A Principal Lecturer for many years, he conducted research into keyboard temperaments throughout history and had his work published internationally. John is now the adjudicator member of the British Federation of Festivals, and the Music Secretary of the Darlington Music Festival. He is also the associate conductor of the Darlington Orchestra. Improve Your Piano Playing marks something of a departure from the old-fashioned textbooks of the past. John says, "Most books on piano playing make little or no reference to how to prevent and correct note errors or exactly what is involved in obtaining variety in piano sound. This book began as written notes to assist my students. Talking with one of them who was a medical doctor put me on the track of concentrating on the workings of the brain, not just control of muscles. Sir James Beament, previously head of the department of Applied Biology at Cambridge and an expert in this field as on many other aspects of music and hearing, has given me valuable advice on the sections in my book dealing with such matters.
